Glendale and The Cheviot Hills are a cycling paradise. There are routes for all abilities from a gentle family roll through the Milfield Plain to a full on day adventure around big hill country and twisting single track.

Click on the links for maps and directions for these local routes, courtesy of www.bikeroutes.org.uk.

There are many more on and off road routes around the area, try the bike routes website for more ideas.

Chillingham

13.5 mile - road route

Suitable for all bikes - entirely on metalled roads - mostly on quiet minor roads. One steep hill to start with, then mainly level with a spectacular downhill ride just before the end.

Harthope Valley

9 miles - on and off road sections

This ride brings you into one of Cheviot's most delightful valleys. There are some optional extras and the distance quoted is just into the valley and back. Whilst there is a rough track section on this route it can be negotiated carefully on a road bike.

Ilderton

17 miles - some off road sections

This is only really suitable for mountain bikes as it takes in rough tracks and four fords. The route can be started in Wooler if you prefer.

St Cuthbert's Cave

26 miles - some off road sections

An excellent excursion over a variety of terrain and while the route could never be described as strenuous there are some tricky sections. A mountain bike is recommended
