Walkers will love St Cuthbert’s Way and the Ravenber long-distance walks along with many other local day walks right from the doorstep, while cyclists can ride on of the way-marked Wooler cycle hub routes, Pennine cycleway or even part of the 200-mile Steel Bonnet cycle route. The area is criss-crossed with numerous bridleways perfect for mountain-biking, there’s some of the finest bouldering in the UK just up the road for people keen to climb and absail. Riding centre’s nearby offer pony trekking and there’s even a gliding school if you fancy taking to the air.
Don’t forget your binoculars for spotting puffins on a boat trip to the sea bird sanctuary on the Farne Islands or in the Cheviots (a golden eagle was spotted recently, as was Bill Oddie). Search the local hills for cup and ring markings, Hillfort’s and other archaeological sites. Eat in our on-site restaurant or visit the town for its inns, specialist shops and grocery stores.
The hostel is a heritage building, a former Women’s Land Army hostel, interpretation panels around the site tells of the fascinating history of the building.
Most important of all find the time to relax at the hostel or in the spacious garden, there’s plenty of room for all.
In 1943 Wooler Hostel was purpose-built to accommodate the Land Army Girls. It was managed by the Young Men’s Christian Association until 1946, when county officers took over.
According to the W.L.A. magazine, Wooler was one of nineteen hostels opened that year, about half of which were purpose-built, click on the button in the left hand column to read more.
