Glendale Local History Society...

Here is Our Wide-ranging Programme for the New Season 2007 - 2008

We are pleased to announce our 2007-08 Society programme. We hope you will agree that it is an interesting and varied one, ranging as it does from our early history (Cup and Ring Carvings) to the present (A Mayor’s Role), and from one of the more respectable parts of our local history (Northumbria’s Golden Age) to the less respectable but equally exciting (The Border Reivers). Full details are listed below.

We are also delighted to announce that we plan to recommence our programme of visits with two special local trips to see the Chillingham Cattle and to examine Cup and Ring Carvings.

Details of these visits will be provided nearer the time (we hope to run them shortly before or after the relevant talk).

The Society had a particularly successful year in 2006-2007, with membership rising to over 40 thanks to a number of new members, and our meetings attracted an average audience of over 30, a clear sign of local interest and a good programme.

What is the Society about?
The Society exists to bring together people with an interest in history (and the impact of history on today’s life), especially that of North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, although our speakers do on occasion range over a wider area.
The Society has in the past been involved in projects such as the successful publication “Wooler at War”, which is still in print, and played a major role in the restoration of the Wooler War Memorial. It has also created a small library, which is now in the process of being reorganised to make it more accessible to members.
We are currently involved in researching the role of the Women’s Land Army in Wooler and the surrounding area in conjunction with the Glendale Gateway Trust, which is refurbishing the old Youth Hostel in Wooler, originally built to provide accommodation for Land Girls. If you have any information about the Land Army, and particularly about anyone who worked as a Land Girl, we’d like to hear from you.

Where and when are Meetings held?
Meetings are held from September to April, normally on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at Cheviot Centre at Padgepool Place in Wooler, finishing by around 9pm.
The Society also holds an Annual Dinner for members and their guests in February at the Tankerville Arms in Wooler.

How Do I Join?
Just come along to a meeting and pay at the door. Membership is only £6 for the entire season (the Dinner is of course additional!), with Visitors welcome at £2 per meeting.
